Dunedin Public Libraries - Why We Are Amazing
This week is Library Week, so we are celebrating just how amazing we are.
Here are some facts (some well known / others not so) that give you a small insight into just how much happens behind the scenes every day. There are a lot of
people hard at work to make the library an amazing place to visit every day.
Amazing Facts - Thursday 13 August
- In any month, there are approximately 6,000 holds on items in the City Library.
- The Information Services Team LOVE answering questions. With over 200 years of reference experience between them, no question is left unanswered. And if they
can't find the answer in-house, they'll ask elsewhere. They've been known to email the United Nations in pursuit of an answer. So contact them with your queries,
or customer questions. No question is too large or small.
- The Bindery has found a variety of weird and disgusting things between the pages of books that they have cared for. These include:
- A used tea bag
- A Lotto ticket
- A slice of bread
- Pubic hair
- A condom (unopened)
- Comments such as: ‘The book’s pure rubbish and not worth reading.’
- The current value of the Heritage Collections is approximately 15 million dollars...and we haven’t even finished going through everything!
- You can become a volunteer courier for Home Services by delivering a regular care pack to one of their housebound customers. Just pop down and ask if there is
anyone who lives near you.
- Parents can save a fortune, and pocket money can be saved by exploring the extensive range of the latest magazines for teenagers in the Teen Space.
- Mosgiel has a book club especially for children. It runs after school on the first Tuesday of every month.
- Waikouaiti Library has a fantastic relationship with their three local schools. There are always regular class visits and virtually every school age child has an
active library card, which means they are all very familiar with the library!
- Blueskin Bay Library is attached to the Community Hall, so many of its clubs and activities take place in there!
- The Bookbus has the highest turnover rate in the Dunedin Public Library network - their books work hard, along with the Bookbus Librarians.
- The Children’s Section has a Children’s Literature Research collection.
- The Port Chalmers Library building sits under the umbrella of the Historic Places and was newly re-furbished in 2004.
