Dunedin Public Libraries - Why We Are Amazing
This week is Library Week, so we are celebrating just how amazing we are.
Here are some facts (some well known / others not so) that give you a small insight into just how much happens behind the scenes every day. There are a lot of
people hard at work to make the library an amazing place to visit every day.
Amazing Facts - Friday 14 August
- On average, between 85,000 - 100,000 people visit a Library within our network each month. Between 50,000 and 60,000 of these will visit the City Library
alone.
- ‘Paaeta, Udforske, Khám phá’ - We have dictionaries in 56 different languages, so no-one should ever be stuck for a word!
- The Bindery has been in the Library since 1938. Our current team has over 59 years of combined experience, and during that time, they have been asked to cover
books in carpet, Astroturf and bright pink shaggy fur. They have just completed work on the smallest book they have ever bound. It is a leather-bound dictionary and
measures just 45mm high and 30mm across.
- Many of the collections in the Reed Special Collections are the largest in the country or simply one of a kind in New Zealand. We hold the oldest medieval
manuscript fragment in New Zealand. It is over 1,000 years old.
- If you have a friend or family member who is housebound, they can take advantage of our Housebound Service. It is free of charge and there is no waiting list to
join.
- The Teen Space in the City Library is a great place for young adults to relax in a safe environment without losing their credibility. The space has a wide screen
television showing selected cable channels, a food vending machine, bean bags, armchairs and couches.
- After the City Library, Mosgiel has the highest number of issues.
- Waikouaiti Library has a reading table bathed in sunshine all afternoon. Perfect for those chilly winter months!
- Blueskin Bay Library is in the process of getting a new building! You can drive out there to see the proposed model on display.
- It’s a hard world out there. If you work on the Bookbus you are issued with long johns, a polyprop top and a jacket - Bookbus Librarians work in extreme
conditions.
- The Children’s Storytime in the City Library is extremely popular, and is attended on average by 70 people each session.
- The Port Chalmers Library is positioned opposite Port Otago - when the Cruise Ships visit they often host visitors from around the globe.
