Dunedin Public Libraries
Supporting Library Week 2009

Escape, Explore, Discover : Ki te whai ao, ki te ao mārama.

About Library Week

Library Week 10-16 August 2009 is a week long celebration of libraries and librarianship in New Zealand taking place in public, school, tertiary, special, law and government libraries across New Zealand.

Library Week is a chance to promote libraries to the public and the event provides New Zealand libraries with a platform to highlight and celebrate the many benefits and opportunities libraries offer the community.

We are very excited that 'Escape, Explore, Discover - Ki te whai ao, ki te ao mārama' is the theme for Library Week 2009. After all libraries enable you to escape into a world of discovery and exploration that will bring about an enriching and positive experience.

‘NZ’s Biggest Storytime’

‘NZ’s Biggest Storytime’ event where libraries across the country will be taking part in a simultaneous reading.

During the week Dunedin Public Libraries branches will be reading Itiiti’s Gift by Melanie Drewery, illustrated by Fifi Colston, (Reed Publishing (NZ) Ltd.

Itiiti’s Gift is the story of a girl who feels clumsy and shy next to the rest of her family who are loud and tall and good at things. Itiiti doesn't think she is good at anything, but her mother tells her that she will find a gift of her own.

Itiiti sets out to find it and to her surprise, her gift finds her! This is a story of self discovery as little Itiiti explores her potential talents and discovers her place in the whanau/community. It fits beautifully with our Library Week theme.

There are a number of competitions you may like to enter:

    • Are you a great illustrator? Then why not enter the Graphic Novel competition, this one has two age categories so there are no excuses for not entering!
    • Calling everyone who loves their library... we want you to make a short video, upload it up and get your friends and family voting!
    • The Interactive Book competition is just for school kids in years 6, 7 and 8. Help create a nationwide story and win book prizes for yourself and your school library!

There's something for everyone but be quick as entries close on Friday 14th August during Library Week.
